Modu is in trouble

- Though it seems that the economic crisis is nearly behind us, not everyone is enjoying a recovery. Dov Moran’s start-up Modu is planning another round of cuts in its operations.
- US converged solutions supplier Comverse expects its BSS platform to serve as the cornerstone for its sales to operators in Latin America, Vicente Ramírez, VP of sales for Comverse Latin America, told BNamericas.
- Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE: CEL) (TASE: CEL) , announced the dismissal of a purported class action filed against the Company in May 2009, in the District Court of Tel-Aviv-Jaffa,
- WiMAX equipement manufacturer, Alvarion has reported a 21% drop in its revenues for the 3rd-quarter to $58.4 million, compared to $74.3 million in 2008. This was also a 0.6% drop on the revenues recorded in the second quarter of 2009.
- Shares of Amdocs Ltd. rose Thursday after the telecommunications equipment maker posted higher fourth-quarter earnings and gave a solid forecast for its fiscal first quarter, a sign that demand for its products may be stabilizing.
- Israel’s Partner Communications - which trades as Orange - has reported a 20% drop in its 3rd-quarter profits to NIS 263 million (US$70 million). Revenues were down by 3.3% to NIS 1,575 million (US$419 million), while EBITDA was down 10.9% to NIS 570 million (US$152 million).
- Internet service provider (ISP) and international calls carrier NetVision Ltd. (TASE: NTSN) opposes the Ministry of Communications’ policy of opening the cellular market to competition through the introduction of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).

Cellcom profits up in second quarter
Written by admin on August 19, 2009 – 10:11 am- Telephone operator Cellcom Israel Ltd said it posted a forecast-beating rise in second-quarter net profit as an increase in content and value-added services offset a decline in roaming revenue from tourism.

O2 will preload telemap navigataion app
Written by admin on August 11, 2009 – 1:14 pm- O2 UK has announced that it is to embed Telmap’s navigation and mapping software into the majority of its GPS-enabled phones. The operator will also be providing first level customer support and billing support for the service.
- Two of Israel’s mobile network operators have submitted non-binding offers to buy rival network, MIRS, which is currently owned by Motorola.
- Partner Communications, Israel’s second largest mobile operator, on Monday posted a 2.1 percent rise in quarterly profit, helped by lower operating expenses and a larger customer base.
- Israel’s Ministry of Communications has ruled that customers who buy their mobile phone from a 3rd party supplier should be entailed to the same operator benefits as customers who buy their handsets from approved suppliers.
- Chip developer Zoran Corporation is laying off several dozen employees from its mobile division. This follows the firing of 40 employees 18 months ago.
- First Israel Mezzanine Investors CEO Ishay Davidi has been disqualified from the race to buy Partner Communications, ostensibly because of noncompliance with the terms laid down by the Israeli mobile service provider’s parent company.
- Allot Communications Ltd , a leader in IP service optimization and revenue generation solutions based on deep packet inspection (DPI), announced a framework agreement with a global tier-1 mobile operator group.
- New York-based Didiom, the “award-winning” mobile media service provider, has this week announced that its Didiom application for on-the-go streaming of computer media to mobile phones is finally making the leap to Research In Motion’s (RIM’s) BlackBerry smartphone.
- Israeli cellular operators have apparently opted for collaboration to deal with Apple Inc’s content model for iPhone. On Friday, Partner Communications Ltd. announced that it would collaborate with leading Israeli websites to create special web applications for iPhone.
- Cellcom Israel Ltd. launched the first Googlephone in Israel. Cellcom will launch the Samsung Electronics i7500 Galaxy Googlephone, which in addition to Google Inc. Android operating system.

Waze is now on the Appstore
Written by admin on August 9, 2009 – 2:53 am- Real-time crowd-sourcing navigation app Waze has cleared Apple’s App Store approval team and appeared for download, promising not only free turn-by-turn directions but peer-based traffic and road-condition updates
- Telefonica, Spain’s leading mobile operator, has selected Olista’s mobile user-experience platform to improve its customers’ experience when using Telefonica’s data services.
- Scailex Corp said on Thursday it had submitted a binding bid for Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd’s majority stake in Partner, Israel’s second-largest mobile phone operator.
- Israel’s Pelephone is planning a bid to buy fellow mobile phone operator MIRS, parent company Bezeq Israel Telecom said on Thursday.
- Pelephon has reportedly announced its financial reports for Q2′09. The mobile operator posted a 13.3% growth in its profits to NIS 1.35 billion in Q2, as compared to NIS 1.19 billion in Q2′08. Operating profit increased to NIS 321 million while net profit rose to NIS 233 million, up 29.4% in comparison to Q2′08.

wefi raises more money
Written by admin on August 5, 2009 – 4:25 am- Lightspeed Venture Partners and Pitango Venture Capital are pouring more capital into WeFi, operator of a global, community-based network of WiFi hotspots, in an undisclosed Series B round of funding and following an earlier round by both investors secured back in May 2007.
- Bezeq Israel Telecom, the country’s dominant phone company, reported a 19 percent rise in quarterly net profit on Wednesday and raised its outlook for the rest of 2009.
- Fring announced today that the Fring 3.40 is now available for Samsung (Symbian) handsets.
- The iGO My Way 2009 turn-by-turn navigation app is now available in the App Store, offering editions for North America, Europe, and Western Europe.
- IDB Holding Corp. Ltd. mobile telecommunications unit Cellcom Israel Ltd. said that it is considering a bid to buy 100 percent of Mirs, the smallest cellular company in Israel.

A study from israel shows a sharp rise in salivary gland cancer that may be linked to mobile phones
Written by admin on July 17, 2009 – 2:24 am- A recent study documents a sharp rise in the incidence of salivary gland cancer in Israel that researchers believe may be linked to the use of mobile phones. The study was commissioned by the Israel Dental Association and directed by Avi Zini of the community dentistry department at the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine. The study included examination of the incidence of oral cavity cancers in Israel from 1970 to 2006.
- Amdocs , the leading provider of customer experience systems, announced that Telenor Sweden, one of the largest mobile operators in Sweden and a subsidiary of the Telenor Group, has selected Amdocs’ Operational Support System (OSS) suite of products to manage and automate its network inventory across its wireline operations.

Written by admin on July 14, 2009 – 4:40 am- Modu first handset will be soft launched in cellcom israel next week. no details yet on price. the company raised about 80 mullion$ hoping to become a major hanstet maker. the launched was delayed by almost a year due to technological and financial problems.
- Mobile advertising start-up Pudding Media recently completed a $3 million second round of financing.
- Comverse today announced completion of a project with Cellcom Israel that upgrades the mobile operator’s own legacy ringback tone service to the Comverse Ringback Tone solution, which will boost sound quality and also add new features.
- Israel-based WiMAX equipment and broadband solutions developer Alvarion Ltd today announced a WiMAX pilot with French operator Bollore Telecom in Marina Port Vauban in the south of France.
